The Story Behind Dove’s Mega Viral “Real Beauty Sketches” Campaign

Anselmo Ramos, creative lead on Dove’s "Real Beauty Sketches" hit discusses the making of a viral sensation. Dove’s “ the New York Times, ABC News, this very site, and in the Huffington Post, where a positive piece about the campaign has been shared almost 40,000 times on Facebook. It has inspired a parody of the original, and now even the blogger backlash to the ad--which complains that it focuses too much on a narrow definition of beauty--has itself gone viral. It’s a real mark of Internet success when even your backlash gets press.

If you haven’t seen it already here or elsewhere, the ad depicts an FBI forensic artist named Gil Zamora sketching women (that he can’t see) by the way they describe themselves. He says things like, "Tell me about your chin," to which these women depressingly reply, “It kind of protrudes a little bit, especially when I smile,” or "My mom told me I had a big jaw." Then strangers sit down and describe these same women to Zamora. The resulting sketches—the ones based on strangers’ descriptions—are ultimately more attractive and look more like their subjects than the ones based on self-description. The idea is that women are too critical of themselves. The tagline: “YOU are more beautiful than you think!”

Anselmo Ramos, a vice president and creative director at Ogilvy Brazil, is one of the key creatives behind this ad--as well as other ingenious creations, like the ad featuring a karaoke mic doubling as a breathalyzer as a way to combat drunk driving. He spoke to us about the inspiration behind the real beauty sketches and how these videos were made. “Everything is a conversation really,” Ramos says of his creative philosophy. “Consumers are ready to engage with brands. We just need to entertain them.”

The Origin of the Idea

We got a simple and ambitious brief from our clients: Make women feel better about themselves. Back in 2007, when Dove won the Cannes Grand Prix with “Evolution,” the “Real Beauty” concept was a completely different point of view from the entire beauty industry. Now that the Campaign for Real Beauty has been established, our job was to talk straight to women in a more intimate, personal way. According to statistics, only 4% of women feel good about themselves across the globe. We decided to do something that would move the other 96%. From the very beginning, we tried to look for an idea that could actually prove they are wrong about their self-image. An experiment. We had several ideas, but “Real Beauty Sketches” really stood out. There’s a lot of merit to the clients, because they didn’t approve a script; they approved a social experiment.

Was There A Back-up Plan?

We always say that if you know exactly what you’re doing, then probably you’re not doing something really new. We like to come up with ideas that a) haven’t been done before, and b) we have no idea how the heck we’ll do it. With “Real Beauty Sketches,” we thought that women would probably describe themselves in a more negative way than strangers. But it was just a guess really, based on common sense and women’s nature. It could go totally wrong. When we told the idea to the clients, we said: “Listen, this is the idea. We don’t know if it’s going to work, but we think it will. The only way to find out is by doing it.” So there’s a lot of merit to the clients, because they didn’t approve a script; they approved a social experiment.

Finding the Best Artist Around

We did an extensive research to find the best sketch artist out there. When we found Gil Zamora, and he told us about his drawing technique by asking questions, and we saw his style and personality, we knew we’d found the right guy. He got really excited about the project and he was crucial for the campaign. There’s something really powerful when you bring together two elements from completely different worlds: an FBI-trained sketch artist and women’s self-esteem.

Casting the Women

The participants where selected through a normal casting session. We looked for women from different ages and ethnicities. And women that could represent well Dove’s concept of “Real Beauty.” The strangers were also selected through casting. The goal was to find nice, easygoing, outspoken people, who could quickly befriend someone and would be able to describe that person later.

Directing the Shoot

The shoot took three days in a loft in San Francisco. Gil would draw a woman describing herself in a day and then draw the stranger describing the same women on a different day. Gil would never really know who exactly he was drawing. The project was shot by John X Carey from Paranoid US. He was the perfect director for the project. He shot it in a beautiful documentary-style way, capturing all the right emotions on camera.

Why It Went Viral

I think it went viral because it moves you, because it makes you think, because it’s based on a true insight. Most ads today don’t evoke any clear emotion, they just communicate a particular product or service benefit. We wanted to do something really emotional. Most women cry when they watch it. But not only women; men, too, because they think about their mothers, sisters, and daughters. I myself cried several times. We knew we had something good in our hands, but yes, we are a little surprised by how fast it went viral. We love it when something we do gets talked about beyond advertising trade publications, by magazines like Fast Company. We also love it when people make the concept their own, by making spoofs and parodies. The “Men: You’re Less Beautiful Than You Think” spoof is really funny.

Responding to Critics Who Say Their Definition of Beauty is Too Narrow

I think the project is pretty diverse. We had Caucasian, African-American, Asian women participating. Like always, we’ve used the best bits, the best moments in terms of editing and to make our point. If 99% of people like it, I think it’s fine. There will always be someone that will say something, no matter what you do. What really matters is that people are spreading quickly the message of "Women: You’re More Beautiful Than You Think." And I think it’s an important and necessary message to put out there. We feel really good about it. Because right now, some woman, somewhere, is watching this film and feeling better about herself.

RUN FROM http://www.Spirit.com or http://www.Spiritair.com

The Public needs to know a few things before booking a cheap airline ticket through Spirit Airlines( http://www.Spirit.com or http://www.spiritair.com ). What they don't tell you until you are ready to check in is that there is a bag charge even for carry on bags.

Example: One week ago I flew Delta and my laptop bag was considered my personal bag and I was allowed one carry-on in addtion. So I had my suitcase and rolling laptop bag that both went for free as carry-ons. Not with Spirit! Not only do they charge you $45 for a checked bag going underneath, but they charge you $50 for a carry-on. You are allowed one personal item.... maybe!

So I was told my rolling laptop bag is too big to be a personal item. So we had 2 suitcases, a bag of food items we were taking for someone else and my computer bag. They charged us $190 because all of our bags were too big for personal items. AFTER charging us, they decided that the computer bag is a personal item after all but... "So sorry the bag charge is NON-Refundable"!

We opted to drive to Dallas, spend a night at the motel because we were leaving early all because the tickets were so much cheaper only to find out that we have to pay $190 extra for bags. We could have flown out of Ft Smith AR for about the same amount of money taking into consideration of the motel and parking and the exorbitant bags fees that we are paying in addition to our cheap Spirit tickets that are now not so cheap.

I said to my wife, this is the last time I will fly Spirit and the lady ahead of me turned around and said I agree. People were not happy because they were not told that carry-ons were not free when they booked their tickets so there was ticket counter drama and a long slow wait to get boarding passes and to check in our bags. Spirit just lost several customers and I will discourage everyone from flying on them until they change their policies.

Then we get to the gate and they are repairing the plane and our flight is expected to leave 3+ hours later than scheduled... UGH

SPIRIT AIRLINES, YOU SHOULD REMEMBER AN UNHAPPY CUSTOMER IS NOT GOOD AND A BUNCH OF UNHAPPY CUSTOMERS IS REALLY NOT GOOD.

The general public shoukld be aware that Spirit tickets are NOT cheaper at all once they are finished gigging you for all of the bag fees.

WHY WE SHOOT DEER IN THE WILD

(A letter from someone who wants to remain anonymous, who farms, writes well and actually tried this)

I had this idea that I could rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.

I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up-- 3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold.

The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it, it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope, and then received an education. The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.

That deer EXPLODED. The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A deer-- no Chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined. The only upside is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals.

A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.

I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual. Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in. I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder - a little trap I had set before hand...kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back.

Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when ..... I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and slide off to then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head--almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts.

The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective.

It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds. I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose.

That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day.

Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp... I learned a long time ago that, when an animal -like a horse --strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.

This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.

Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head.

I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away. So now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope......to sort of even the odds!!

All these events are true so help me God...An Educated Farmer

It’s OK to Kill Your Children but Not Educate Them

SwedenHomeschoolingLogo_small2

A number of countries are clamping down on family education of children, better known as homeschooling. Parents decide to educate their children in the home instead of sending them off to a government institution or a private school that must adhere to specific state educational guidelines.
Free-sex Sweden is notorious for denying parents the right to educate their children at home. A woman can kill her pre-born baby up until the eighteenth week of pregnancy for any reason, but if she decides to give birth, the State controls her child’s education.

Rabbi Alexander Namdar and his wife Leah decided to educate their children at home “to ensure that their instruction ran parallel to their Jewish beliefs. Just weeks after an appellate judge’s verdict supported the parents’ right to homeschool their five children, Swedish government officials challenged the decision.”The Namdars won their battle with the State, but the media and leftist political groups denounced the court decision.
Then there’s the story of Annie and Christer Johansson who had their parental rights terminated in regard to their son, Domenic. “The boy and his parents were on board a jetliner minutes from departing Sweden for Annie’s home country of India when Domenic was seized in June 2009. The reason authorities initially gave for taking Domenic was that he had been homeschooled.“During subsequent medical evaluations, Domenic was found to have missed some vaccinations and ‘had cavities’ in his teeth.“During the first months following his seizure the parents were only permitted to visit Domenic once every two weeks. This quickly became once every five weeks, and in 2010 all visitations were cut off.”
Other Swedish homeschooling families have fled the country when officials threatened to levy massive fines against the parents and retaliate by way of social service directives that don’t need court-ordered permission to remove children from so-called abusive homes.

Now we are learning that the German government is clamping down on homeschooling families. In 1938, homeschooling was outlawed in Germany  by Adolf Hitler. Given what we know, the law was never rescinded, and the German government is taking full advantage of the Nazi-era law. The German Supreme Court has banned homeschooling to “counteract the development of religious and philosophically motivated parallel societies.” Germany wants State-sanctioned conformity. Mussolini described modern-day fascistic governments like Sweden and Germany: “Everything for the State; nothing outside the State; nothing against the State.”

It’s always been the dream of tyrannical governments to eliminate all competitive thought. Adolf Hitler understood it better than anybody. The following is from William L. Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich:
“When an opponent declares, ‘I will not come over to your side,’ [Adolf Hitler] said in a speech on November 6, 1933, “I calmly say, ‘Your child belongs to us already. . . . What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing else but this new community.’” And on May 1, 1937, [Hitler] declared, “This new Reich will give its youth to no one, but will itself take youth and give to youth its own education and its own upbringing.”[1]

There is still freedom to educate our children outside the government system. It’s too bad that more parents aren’t taking advantage of that freedom. Why are young people adopting a liberal, politically progressive ideology today? Because they’ve been taught to think this way for the greater part of their young life – 6 hours each day, 5 days a week, 10 months of every year for 12 years.

If you want to change the direction of America, get them out of the government schools before you can’t.

2013 Inaugaral Prayer Breakfast Sermon

I believe we as Christians are called to pray and preach the truth & fight God's battles for the heavenly
kingdom. Therefore when I heard that the minister that was asked to speak was actually a Messianic Rabbi who stood for biblical principals & salvation through Jesus Christ and I received an email asking me to write and encourage him to use his time at the 2013 inaugural prayer breakfast to preach repentance, I did so. You can see the email below in bold red print that I sent him and the response I got back.
I am sharing this with you for several reasons.
 1. Because I believe it affects how we should be praying for our country's leaders!
 2. Our President has been told the truth of God's word so we should pray that the powers of darkness that is obviously at work is bound in the name of Jesus so God's Spirit speak to Mr. Obama.
 3. Also pray for protection & safety for Pastor Cahn. Satan cannot be ok with what he said to the President and other leaders of our country.
Now after reading the email correspondence between Cahns office & I, scroll down and click the picture below to watch the video of the actual sermon. I just cried as I listened because it ministered to my own heart but also because President Obama will NEVER be able say he didn't know! I thank God for faithful prophets in the land. it has been taken down from YouTube several times I understand, so do a favor, pass this on to everyone you know so they too can pray.

Dear Rabbi,
am writing because of the times we live in and the opportunity you have before you to be the keynote speaker at the inaugural breakfast, to urge you too call America to a place of repentance. Repentance for the shedding of the innocent blood of millions of unborn babies, the sins of homosexuality and more, peradventure like Israel of old, when they repented that God would have mercy on them, so He would have mercy on us!
We are also praying for you that you would through the power of the Holy Spirit preach an anointed message that would bring forth repentance.

China poised to play debt card – for U.S. land

Phil Petre - 1/21/13

Am I the only one this bothers?? Are the Chinese going to controlled territory inside America? The Chinese and Australians are spending $350 Million and opening a coal mine shaft less than a mile from my house in Oklahoma.  Is IDAHO soon to be the first Chinese state in USA?

EDITOR’S NOTE: Barack Obama’s involvement in the DeMar Second Amendment case was previously reported in Chapter 7 of Jerome R. Corsi’s “America for Sale: Fighting the New World Order, Surviving a Global Depression, and Preserving USA Sovereignty.”

NEW YORK – Could real estate on American soil owned by China be set up as “development zones” in which the communist nation could establish Chinese-owned businesses and bring in its citizens to the U.S. to work?

That’s part of an evolving proposal Beijing has been developing quietly since 2009 to convert more than $1 trillion of U.S debt it owns into equity. Under the plan, China would own U.S. businesses, U.S. infrastructure and U.S. high-value land, all with a U.S. government guarantee against loss. Yu Qiao, a professor of economics in the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsighua University in Beijing, proposed in 2009 a plan for the U.S. government to guarantee foreign investments in the United States.

WND has reliable information that the Bank of China, China’s central bank, has continued to advance the plan to convert China’s holdings of U.S. debt into equity owned by China in the U.S.
The Obama administration, under the plan, would grant a financial guarantee as an inducement for China to convert U.S. debt into Chinese direct equity investment. China would take ownership of successful U.S. corporations, potentially profitable infrastructure projects and high-value U.S. real estate.

Jerome Corsi exposes the globalists’ plan to put America on the chopping block in “America for Sale: Fighting the New World Order, Surviving a Global Depression, and Preserving USA Sovereignty,” available at WND’s Superstore.

The plan would be designed to induce China to resume lending to the U.S. on a nearly zero-interest basis. However, converting Chinese debt to equity investments in the United States could easily add another $1 trillion to outstanding Obama administration guarantees issued in the current economic crisis. As of November 2012, China owned $1.17 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities, according to U.S. Department of Treasury and Federal Reserve Board calculations published Jan. 16.

Concerned about the unrestrained growth in U.S. debt under the Obama administration, China has reduced by 97 percent its holdings in short-term U.S. Treasury bills. China’s holding of $573.7 billion in August 2008, prior to the massive bank bailouts and stimulus programs triggered by the collapse in the U.S. mortgage market, dwindled to $5.96 billion by March 2011.

Treasury bills are short-term debt that matures in one year or less, sold to finance U.S. debt. Holdings of Treasury bills are included in the $1.17 trillion of total Treasury securities owned by China as of November 2012.

In addition to a national debt in excess of $16 trillion, the U.S. government in 2010 faced over $70 trillion in unfunded obligations, including Social Security and Medicare benefits scheduled to be paid retiring baby boomer retirees in the coming decades, with unfunded obligations showing no sign of being reduced with Congress at a deadlock over reducing federal government spending.

Yu Qiao observed that if the U.S. dollar collapsed under the weight of proposed Obama administration trillion-dollar budget deficits into the foreseeable future, holders of U.S. debt would face substantial losses that the Financial Times estimated “would devastate Asians’ hard-earned wealth and terminate economic globalization.”

“The basic idea is to turn Asian savings, China’s in particular, into real business interests rather than let them be used to support U.S. over-consumption,” Yu Qiao wrote, reflecting themes commonly suggested by Chinese government officials. “While fixed-income securities are vulnerable to any fall in the value of the dollar, equity claims on sound corporations and infrastructure projects are at less risk from a currency default,” he continued.

The problem is that, in a struggling U.S. economy, China does not want to trade its investment in U.S. Treasury debt securities, with their inherent risk of dollar devaluation, for equally risky investments in U.S. corporations and infrastructure projects.

“But Asians do not want to bear the risk of this investment because of market turbulence and a lack of knowledge of cultural, legal and regulatory issues in U.S. businesses,” he stressed. “However if a guarantee scheme were created, Asian savers could be willing to invest directly in capital-hungry U.S. industries.”

Yu Qiao’s plan included four components:
 1. China would negotiate with the U.S. government to create a “crisis relief facility,” or CRF. The CRF “would be used alongside U.S. federal efforts to stabilize the banking system and to invest in capital-intensive infrastructure projects such as high-speed railroad from Boston to Washington, D.C.
 2. China would pool a portion of its holdings of Treasury bonds under the CFR umbrella to convert sovereign debt into equity. Any CFR funds that were designated for investment in U.S. corporations would still be owned and managed by U.S. equity holders, with the Asians holding minority equity shares “that would, like preferred stock, be convertible.”
 3. The U.S. government would act as a guarantor, “providing a sovereign guarantee scheme to assure the investment principal of the CRF against possible default of targeted companies or projects”.
 4. The Federal Reserve would set up a special account to supply the liquidity the CRF would require to swap sovereign debt into industrial investment in the United States.
“The CRF would lessen Asians’ concern about implicit default of sovereign debts caused by a collapsing dollar,” Yu Qiao concluded. “It would cost little and help the U.S. by channeling funds to business investment.”
